Levitated above the surrounding context of central Los Angeles, Kanvas, a new 67-unit, 7-story multifamily complex creates a new series of landscapes for living each lifted skyward, one above the next. Organized as a series of seven slabs rising above the streetscape of the city center below, each floor’s varied profile is slipped in sections and ringed with wide balconies overlooking the city below.

Each floor’s stepped perimeter is animated by sunlight and shadow over the course of the day, their edges varying between slabs and thicker volumes, thin columns punctuating the elevations and drawing the eye skyward. Large floor to ceiling glazing punctuates the form within, where each unit is organized in relationship with the continuous balconies adjacent. Within the building, a large, six level atrium rises upward, its serpentine, figural profile incorporating public balconies overlooking a central courtyard below. Public spaces also include retail along the entirety of the ground floor, exercise and recreation spaces adjacent to the central courtyard, and a broad roof deck that stretches across the entirety of the building, incorporating grassy platforms for recreation, planting and two large bosques of trees, a diversity of amenity spaces, and stepped gathering spaces to take in the view stretching outward in every direction.
