Over the past three and a half decades, Technical Director Hiroshi Tokumaru has been responsible for the design and construction of several of the world’s most complex and celebrated buildings. Founded on a close collaborative relationship with Wil Carson that extends back nearly two decades, Hiroshi directs all aspects of 64North’s technical design, detailing, and coordination of building systems for construction, comprehensively addressing quality control, constructability and cost, codes and regulations, sustainability and materials research, and construction oversight.

Prior to joining 64North, he was responsible for the design and construction of notable projects that have achieved international prominence at Gehry Partners, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Experience Music Project, Berlin’s DG Bank, the Case Western Weatherhead School of Management, University of Cincinnati’s Vontz Center for Molecular Studies, Dusseldorf’s Zollholf Towers and Hanover’s Uestra Tower, the Marta Museum, and Princeton’s Lewis Library.

Following his 14-year tenure at Gehry Partners, he was the Senior Technical Director at Michael Maltzan Architecture for 11 years, where he supervised the execution of the entirety of the office’s built work, projects that have been recognized with 33 awards from the American Institute of Architecture and five American Architecture Awards. He has also worked for Archimedes Bauplanungsgesellschaft in Hereford, Germany, Kisho Kurakawa, Commonwealth Engineers, and Nishimatsu Construction in Tokyo.

Born in Tokyo, Hiroshi holds degrees from the Southern California Institute of Architecture and the Tokyo Design Academy with additional studies in Lugano, Switzerland. Beyond 64North, Hiroshi enjoys family life and traveling to visit his native Japan.
