Its five masts connected by a unique cable-stayed tensegrity structure, the Five Sails Bridge is the central connective element of a major new 565-acre development in Chengdu, the cultural heart of China’s Sichuan Province. The bridge, for which Wil Carson was the Senior Designer at MMA, spans more than 700 feet in length, the bridge touches down in just two points, with intermediate 50’ high masts levitated above the water below. The design, developed in collaboration with CABR, noted structural engineers for projects including Linked Hybrid, splits at its center, linking pedestrian and cyclist paths with a marina level beneath, as the bridge takes its place at the nexus of the development’s expansive network of canals and lakes.
